ADO bus, taxi and car driving in Cancun
In Cancún there is only the possibility with the tour operator, the ADO bus or the taxi to be transported from the airport in the direction of the hotel. Ubers has not existed since December 2017 in either Playa del Carmen or Cancún. This is what the “Taximafia” has taken care of.
As you can guess, I’m absolutely no fan of the taxis here locally. They are of course much cheaper than in Germany, but they throw their prices and drive without a clock. The locals know the local prices, but also here and there simply more estimated. So to speak, at the whim of the taxi driver. The ADO bus stops at the airport and leaves every 20 minutes to Cancun, Playa del Carmen etc.
Rides, destinations and prices can be found at https://www.ado.com.mx/#/.
My advice therefore to anyone who wants to go on
vacation, use as much as possible the ADO bus. He drives from Cancún very cheap across Quintana Roo.
Alternatively, you can rent a car, which I would personally recommend, because everything is very spacious and you are more flexible. At the end of the day, it is also much cheaper. The refueling is very cheap in Mexico. You can drive with your license and rent a car with it.
Incidentally, the Mexican driver’s license is purchased for around 800 pesos and is valid for one year. Only the vision and any criminal record will be checked during the application. The whole thing takes about 1 hour and the Mexican is on the road with his driver’s license.
I suspect every reader can imagine about how to drive. There are not many rules, but everytime you have to drive more slowly you will see roadway pillows. Sometimes you do not see them at all, because not all are marked or colored. How many times have I massacred the car of my boyfriend I do not want to explain with more details here.
The mexican driver’s license is just a formality and is more needed for long trips to other states. What makes me come to the next point.
If someone is under the influence of alcohol and
caught by the “Alcoholimetros”, who is allowed to give his car key and goes directly to prison for 24 hours, to be caught the second time 36 hours. “Under the influence of alcohol” applies here already from the second beer!
The car can be picked up at the other end of the city the next day. Where exactly, I do not know, because after the consumption of alcohol I drive only by bus or taxi. This rule is also true for tourists, the excuse “I did not know this” draws at the “Alcoholimetros” not.
The Mexican police, on the other hand, just push a few bills into their hands and the journey continues. The “Alcoholimetros” can be thought of as a great traffic control. From Thursdays there are one or two places in Cancún that will be closed off and then the alcohol controls will take place there.
However, usually you can find on Twitter an update on which street they are exactly, but nevertheless my advice, car or alcohol, but please never both!
